September is Missouri Wine Month!
25th Sep 2013
Celebrate Missouri wine month at the Hermann Wurst Haus! We offer free samples of 5-6 wines from our local wineries each weekend.
The wineries in the historic Hermann area are the heart and soul of Missouri wine country. In 1837 a group of German settlers from Philadelphia arrived in this region and thought how this area reminded them of their homeland in Germany. The town of Hermann was founded and the German's soon discovered that grapes grew very well on the hillsides over looking the Missouri River. The founding fathers encouraged grape growing by selling vacant lots for $50 interest free, if the buyer planted grapes on the lot.
The Hermann area soon flourished with vineyards and wineries, and by the turn of the century (1900), Hermann was one of the largest wine producing regions in the country! Prohibition in 1919, devastated the Hermann wine region but in 1965 the renaissance began when Stone Hill Winery reopened. Today, the Hermann area thrives with vineyards and wineries producing award winning regional wines.
We raise a glass of Hermann wine in honor of our founding fathers and the success of the Hermann area wineries! Come and celebrate with us this weekend!
