Wurst Haus Wins Small Business of the Year Award

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s St. Louis District Office has announced the Eastern Missouri winners for Small Business Week 2016 and the honorees include a Hermann area business.

The Rural Owned Small Business of the Year award winner is Michael Sloan, Hermann Wurst Haus in Hermann. Sloan was nominated by Elias McDonald of the city of Hermann.

Small Business Week of Eastern Missouri will be celebrated May 2-7 with events throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area celebrating small businesses. Small Business award winners will be recognized at an awards luncheon May 5 at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac.

The other winners are as follows:

  • The Small Business Exporter of the Year award winner is Jesse Stricker, Intek Corporation, 290 Independence, Union. Intek was nominated by Pablo Arroyo of the Missouri Small Business & Technology Development Center.
  • Small Business Person of the Year — David Bailey, CEO/founder, Bailey’s Restaurants, St. Louis. Nominated by Brad McLaury of Midwest Regional Bank.
  • Women Owned Small Business of the Year — Julia Escandon, AW Healthcare, St. Louis. Nominated by J onathan Jones of Vistage Worldwide, Inc.
  • Family Owned Small Business of the Year — Nathan and Christina Bennett, Hendel’s Market Restaurant, Florissant. Nominated by Rich Hendel, formerly of Boeing.
  • Veteran Owned Small Business of the Year — Josh Frank, RSM Federal, O’Fallon. Nominated by Darcella Craven of the Veterans’ Business Resource Center.
  • Start-Up of the Year — Denny and Barry Foster, Main & Mill Brewing Co., Festus. Nominated by Tyler Bender of Midwest Regional Bank.
  • Home-Based Small Business of the Year — Chris Robinson, R3 Coaching, Wentzville. Nominated by Lisa Tiffany of Midland States Bank.
  • Minority Owned Small Business of the Year — Tommy Davis Jr., TD4. Nominated by Dan Ramacciotti of Webster University.
  • Technology Business of the Year — Venkat Pulumati, Nvision IT, Chesterfield. Nominated by Lee Holmes.
  • Immigrant Owned Small Business of the Year — Andres Benavides and Claudia Barona, LIFEPACK, LLC, St. Louis. Nominated by Lynette Watson of the Missouri Small Business & Technology Development Center.
  • Entrepreneurial Success Award — Russ Odegard and Mike Pruett, Dynalabs, LLC, St. Louis. Nominated by Dynalabs
  • Graduate of the Year — Jeffery W. Kelley, Unitech Consulting, LLC, St. Louis. Nominated by Tracey Jeffries.

Small Business Week is a nationwide celebration and recognition of small business owners, small business champions and government contractors, hosted and sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration and celebrated at the district, state, regional and national level. It culminates every year with the national celebration in Washington, D.C. where the national award winners are recognized.

Hermann has had several Small Business of the Year recipients;

  • In 1982, Jim and Betty Held, Stone Hill Winery, were awarded Missouri's Small Business of the Year.
  • In 1996, Ms. Phyllis Hannan, Laser Light Technologies, was awarded the Small Business Person of the Year for the state of Missouri and went on to win the same award for the entire country.
